PIKEVILLE, KY. (October 4, 2007) – Center Lukasz Obrzut – the sixth round pick of the
East Kentucky Miners in this year’s CBA Draft – has signed a one-year
deal with the NBA’s Indiana Pacers.
Obrzut is a University of Kentucky product who had been a fixture in
the Indiana Pacers camp before signing with the NBA team.
A Gilwice, Poland native, Obrzut played in 33 of Kentucky's 34 games
during his senior season, making two starts for the Wildcats.
As a junior at Kentucky, Obrzut started 16 games for the Wildcats,
shooting 53.7 percent from the field. He pulled down a career-high nine
rebounds during 30 minutes of playing time versus rival Louisville.
As a sophomore, Obrzut played in 28 games for the storied Kentucky
men's basketball program.
During the 2003-04 season – his freshman campaign with the Wildcats
– Obrzut played in 31 games.
“At the end of the day after we had done our research and went back and
forth for over a month on whether or not we would draft Woo, we wanted
to go ahead and reserve his rights,” confided East Kentucky Coach Kevin
Keathley. “We knew the Pacers were excited about Lukasz and all of the
hard work he was putting in. And when we drafted him, we knew there was
a chance that he would sign with the Pacers.”
The East Kentucky coach had the opportunity to get very acquainted with
Obrzut in recent months.
“Woo is a high-quality young man,” Keathley commented. “He’s a yes sir,
no sir type of person. He works extremely hard in the gym. The Kentucky
coaches – past and present – spoke highly of his work ethic. The Pacers
got a real find in Woo.”
